Delaware Water Gap

The AT crosses the Delaware River into New Jersey at the Delaware Water Gap, which the park service manages as a National Recreation Area. The valley is sort of tucked in between the big industrial/commercial areas of Scranton, Newark and Philadelphia, so you might not expect it to offer much in the way of nature and wildlife. In fact, the river water is exceptionally clean and the area is heaving with birds and animals; it seems like the rangers have their hands full year-round protecting nesting areas, seasonal migration paths and unique habitats.

I've never been in the park, but after reading about it and seeing the pictures, I imagine it's a popular place with the people who live in the cities and towns nearby!
