The Long Trail

In Vermont, the AT shares the same dirt with the Long Trail for 100 miles. The Long Trail was started in 1910 (it's the oldest long-distance trail in the country) and runs the entire length of the state - over 270 miles - from the Mass border to Quebec. Legend has it that Benton MacKaye, the man who originally dreamed up the idea for the Appalachian Trail, was inspired while he was on the Long Trail, helping with its construction.

The Long Trail was built by and is maintained by the Green Mountain Club, one of the oldest and most well-known "outdoor" clubs in the nation, with over 10,000 members.
