There are lots of hiker hostels along the trail; inexpensive places where hikers can stay the night, get a shower and do their laundry (sometimes by hand!) and generally regroup and recharge. They are all unique and reflect the personalities of their owners.
Green Mountain House, in Manchester, is one of the nicest. The whole house is for hikers, you have full use of the kitchen and washer/dryer, and you get a free pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream!
